What is a Gas Piston Air Rifle?
A gas piston air rifle is a rifle that uses a piston filled with nitrogen or another inert gas that fills the air chamber when the gun is cocked. They work similarly to gas struts that lift the hatchback of a car and are an alternative to the coiled spring piston rifles. Other common names for a gas piston air rifle are gas ram or nitro piston.
How Does a Gas Piston Air Rifle Work?
With a gas piston air rifle, you are the power source. The effort you use to compress the piston provides the power needed to compress the air in the chamber. They often use a break barrel or underlever mechanism to compress and cock the gun.
The compressed gas remains under tension until you pull the trigger. When fired, the gas expands, driving the piston forward, which compresses the air in front of it until it propels the pellet down the barrel.
