Did you know that the name of the Saxon race was derived from the knife they carried? Its true the Sax knife was so important in their daily lives that an entire people became known by it. So, what was so special about this knife that it endured from the from the 6th to the 12th century? The answer is, it was easy and cheap to make and incredibly versatile and effective. Usually found without a guard, with a simple wood or bone hilt it offered a long wide, thick blade with a straight edge and a sloping point (easy to forge). This made it just about ideal as it chopped, sliced, hacked, whittled and carved and was no slouch in a fight as the weight forward balance of the blade and sloping point made ferocious chopping and thrusting strokes effortless. Over the years we have become quite enamored with the history and work potential of the sax so we decided to make a simple version we call the Woodsmans Sax. Like some historical saxes that have survived, the Woodsmans features a stout 11 long blade with the characteristic sloping point and an unadorned wooden handle made from exotic imported hardwood. Each of our broad bladed saxes also come with a sturdy "period correct leather scabbard, complete with belt straps, and accented with solid brass "period correct buckles.

Cold Steel made in India? The knife isn't even stamped. The sheath fits a little too tight with a small welt. The blade seems well made and the handle fit and finish is good, But this is not what I expect from Cold Steel for this price.
Knife was in relatively good shape handle is a different color than displayed. The wood was stained to be darker. The only downside of it was that the blade barely fits inside of its sheath. Overall, I feel like I got my moneys worth
I really like this knife. The handle is a bit chunky, but hey you have material to play with. I spent about a 45 minutes with some sandpaper and made it fit my hand. The only problem is the straps even after putting sno seal on it it still cracked the finish.
Heavy Blade, came sharp but made it sharper.I would have preferred the sheath to just have belt loops and not buckles which are not really helpful in my opinion.I have not used it enough to see how well the edge holds up, but I think it will do well. Overall, I would give a 4 1/2 for the value, appearance and purpose. I would have no problem recommending to anyone interested in an old school sax
I've been very unimpressed with the item and the service that i recieved. The edge is over-ground near the handle, making it uneven. The handle is very blocky, has deep sanding marks against the grain, and is stained with some sort of pigment that was never sealed up so it leaves color on your skin. The blade has little "pits" that look like they were left there by vice/clamp jaws and they tried to buff them out but they're still there and now the polishing is really uneven. It came in an unlabeled black box with no branding on the box or the blade. There is no indication that this is a cold steel piece. I guess i don't blame them, i wouldn't want my name on this either. I've seriously seen factory seconds with less issues than this piece.
The handle came in a different color instead of the one that is showen in the picture it came in a soviet red wood handle with some kind of sticky coat on but with sand paper and it's great and better then the one in the picture it's razor sharp and I highly recommend this knife.
Blade and edge were as expected. Handle was shaped and stained differently than pictured. Stain bleeds into sweaty hands. Sheath was nicely stitched and detailed, but leather was so dry the belt loops cracked in the process of threading them through buckles. Not the old Cold Steel quality
