These are much more effective performers on small game & pests (red squirrels in my case) than standard HP Mini Mags. The segmented bullet actually does what is claimed, delivering excellent performance from rifles while still expanding/fragmenting excellently in test media out of a Ruger Wrangler's sub-5" barrel. As is typical for Mini Mags, feeding reliability tends to be excellent while accuracy appears comparable to other CCI loads (average-very good) I've used. It's good to see they are making the new segmented bullet available in a wide range of offerings; Mini Mag, Hyper (Stinger), Subsonic, Quiet, etc. Historically, CCI has used rather underwhelming HP bullets in both their .22 LR & WMR loadings. I believe this new bullet is their effort to correct that failing, at least to a certain extent. Cost appears to be no greater than normal Mini Mag rounds on average. These perform well in handguns & rifles and function fine in semi-auto actions.
Things I Would Have ChangedLike all CCI products, they are relatively expensive for what they are. CCI has always been known for making reliable ammunition, but their quality control has taken a noticeable downturn in recent years, even before the COVID pandemic. At least their customer service seems to be decent if you need it. For larger game or defensive use, the standard Mini Mag or Stinger HPs will likely provide superior penetration, albeit with less overall expansion. For pure defensive use, I would suggest the 40 grain Aguila Interceptor solid over these rounds anyway. Excellent fragmentation damage & hydrostatic shock transfer make them especially well-suited for pest control, but may cause too much meat destruction if you intend to eat your quarry.
What Others Should KnowWinchester/Browning also makes a segmented HP loading or two if you want to compare brands in testing. Additionally, Winchester Power Point & White Box loads (using conventional HP bullets) are almost as destructive as the various segmented bullets, but cost far less than them. Be prepared for potential issues with CCI QC, as it can & does happen, despite what some will tell you. Don't be afraid to contact their customer service department if you have problems, as in my experience they will attempt to make things right for you.
