Airsoft 6mm BBsThe wide majority of Airsoft guns all use the same caliber ammunition: 6mm BBs. Traditionally, players choose from one of three different weights: 0.12, 0.2, or 0.25 grams. The type of BB used can have a direct impact on the speed, distance and accuracy of each shot. Generally speaking, lighter BBs are preferred with spring pistols, while heavier ones work best with gas-powered guns and AEGs.
When it comes to Airsoft BBs, a basic rule of thumb states that the lighter the pellet, the higher the velocity but the lower the stability. Conversely, heavier BBs tend to be slower when shot, but maintain a more stable trajectory and are therefore more accurate. With sniper rifles, for example, you'll want to use much heavier BBs since accuracy is your primary focus.
Although most BBs made for Airsoft guns are made of plastic, there are a wide variety of available designs. Some are biodegradable, while others may be glow in the dark or have a specific color. More recently, certain companies have begun releasing BBs that contain paint. These are meant to explode on impact, leaving a visible trace to determine whether another player has been hit. Such ammunition isn't recommended for guns using a Hop-Up system, as they tend to break in the gun and create a mess.
Interestingly, there is nothing "soft" about being hit by an Airsoft 6mm BB from 20 feet away. The plastic used to manufacture BBs is hard and it can leave quite a sting if you aren't properly protected.
